TOP JEWELLERY TIPS

⦁ KEEP DIAMONDS SEPARATE

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but keep each piece far away from each other! A diamond is the hardest substance on earth, and if you clump it together with other gemstones such as rubies, emeralds and sapphires, as well as silver, gold, and platinum. you can risk ruining your other beautiful pieces. In order to prevent this, you should keep all your diamonds in separate soft cloth pouches.

⦁ KEEP IN A COOL, DRY AREA AWAY FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT

All jewelry are allergic to humidity and high temperatures! Especially here in sunny Singapore, we have to take extra steps to ensure that all of our jewelry be stored somewhere away from direct sunlight (and that means not on your vanity!) Also beware of putting any jewelry that absorbs light (think big diamonds, stone statement pieces, and clear bangles) in direct sunlight–you don’t want to start a fire in your bedroom.

⦁ STORE STERLING SILVER JEWELRY WITH CHALK

This is one old-school trick you can use to keep your silver jewelry clean and dry. Chalk has been known to naturally absorb moisture and chemical residue, so try placing a piece of chalk in your jewelry box or stored in your jewelry storage bags. If a little dusting gets on your jewelry–don’t fret, just lightly dust it off with a soft, tarnish-proof cloth!

⦁ DON’T LAYER THE BIG, BAD, BANGLES

As much as it is to hear the clanking of your chic bangles, keep in mind that your jewelry is being chipped and worn-away with every single clash! This tip is especially relevant for those who wear gold or silver-plated jewelry, as the plating can easily come off due to wear and tear. Opt instead to layer lighter and more delicate pieces to minimize abrasion!

⦁ DON’T WEAR YOUR JEWELRY SWIMMING

It’s tempting to wear those bangles that look great with your bikini, but moisture, humidity, chlorine, and saltwater just are the biggest enemies of your precious silvers and golds. Instead, opt for faux or leather pieces — they’ll keep your precious stones from looking worse for wear.

⦁ SWEAT WILL RUIN YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES, UNFORTUNATELY

Now this one’s a tough one, especially to us living near the Equator, but don’t forget to put on lotions, perfumes, and body glitter before you put on your jewelry, and allow your skin to completely dry before it comes into contact with gold or silver-plating jewelry.

⦁ USE PROPER JEWELRY STORAGE BAGS

Don’t like how individual ziplock bags clutter your storage space? Jewelry brands sell jewelry storage bags for a reason! Keep your jewelry in cushioned jewelry storage bags that have specific sections for rings, necklaces, watches, and bracelets. This tip is especially recommended for those who own sterling silver jewelry, as silver is one most delicate and volatile materials used in jewelry-making.

⦁ DON’T LET SILVER TOUCH RUBBER ITEMS

Don’t let silver jewelry touch rubber items such as rubber bands, as the sulphur within the rubber will cause the silver to tarnish.

⦁ USE ZIPLOCK BAGS TO STORE YOUR JEWELRY

Cheap and effective, ziplock bags are actually the best bet when it comes to storing jewelry! Ziplock bags can be used to store gold, silver, gold/silver-plated jewelry, and for jewelry with precious stones, as long as you keep the air out of them. Keeping them in individual bags will not just keep them from being exposed to harsh environments, but you can also avoid different pieces of jewelry tangling or rubbing against each other. Just make sure the bags you use don’t contain abrasive materials, like Mylar or polyethylene.
